Gerald Anthony
Slavin, 73, of Muskogee, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at his home. He was
born December 30, 1930 in Hyannis, Massachusetts to Richard and Amy
(Childs) Slavin.
Gerald grew up in Massachusetts and later attended Florida Southern
College on a full music scholarship where he earned a Bachelor of
Science degree in Music. In 1975, he moved to Muskogee. He continued
his education at Northeastern State University where he received a
Master's Degree in Music and a Bachelors Degree in History. In the late
1970's Gerald began a career with the Veterans Administration Medical
Center as a security guard and retired after over twenty years of
service.
Gerald was a very talented musician. He was a concert pianist and
violinist. He was also a decorated soldier, earning numerous service
medals during his twenty-two year army career. Gerald spoke five
languages and was notorious for writing letters to the editor. He was a
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Preceding Gerald in death were his parents and two brothers, Richard
Slavin and Dan Slavin. He is survived by his wife, Faye, of the home;
two sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Rhonda Slavin of Owasso and
Eric and Sarah Slavin of Milwaukee, WI; daughter, Michele Wright of
Muskogee; step-son, Danny Nunn and his wife, Evaline, of Okay; four
step-daughters, Jeannie Leigh and her husband, John, of Claremore,
Dorinda Bruce and her husband, Kent, of Leonard, OK, Janet Weygandt and
her husband, Reggie, of Claremore and Susan Zoltak of Broken Arrow;
sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul
Slavin; four sisters, Alice Krafft, Claire Gagnon, Anne Kelly and
Margie Slavin and a special friend, his dog Michael.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Ft. Gibson National
Cemetery with Father Robert Dye officiating. Pallbearers will be Shawn
Slavin, David Woodall, Reggie Weygandt, Bob Furrh, John Padgett, James
Fitzgerald and John Leigh. Military honors will be presented at the
graveside by members of VFW Post 474.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering
Funeral Home.
