also of the NC National Guard
Specialist Leon Reece Penland, Jr., a military policeman from
Detachment 2, 210th Military Police Company, died last night, 22 Sept.
1999 at approximately 11:00 p.m. after his HMMWV overturned after
hitting a washout while on patrol in Caswell Beach, Brunswick County.
Specialist Penland was thrown from his vehicle.
National Guard Military Police have been assisting Brunswick County Law
Enforcement by providing security patrols and an uniformed presence.
Accompanying the patrol were three civilian Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMTs), two females and one male. The male is the father of
one of the females. The two females were taken to New Hanover Hospital
and the male to Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. The identities
of the civilians are not available at the time of this release.
The accident was reported by Sheriff Hewitt of Brunswick County.
Sheriff Hewitt is investigating further details of the accident. The
primary next of kin for Specialist Penland are his parents, Leon R.
Penland and Irene Penland from Hayesville, N.C. The parents were
notified of the death of their son last night by Sheriff Woody of Clay
County.
