"A Good Friend" - When Joe was around your spirits were always kicked up a notch. Joe could turn the most boring night on the corner into an event. You could count on him for a laugh even when things seemed grim. He was the only person I knew who knew who Claude Reins was (Joe watched a lot of late night TV). Good friends are hard to loose.

"One of Philadelphia PA's 630 fallen sons." - Photo and article were taken from the Philadelphia Daily News of October 26, 1987. The special supplement entitled, 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' was published in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.

"Joey" Lodise "was the kind of boy who tried to live and enjoy life to the fullest," recalled his parents. "His goal...was waiting for the day to come home, back to his job and make a good life for himself." the 1965 Thomas Edison High School graduate worked at the Philadelphia-Baltimore-Washington stock Exchange before joining the Army in July 1967. The military policeman was assigned to the 300th Military Police Company in Viet Nam. He died in Vinh Long Province on May 1, 1968, as the result of a machine-gun malfunction. In addition to his parents, the 20-year-old private first class was survived by two sisters.

BATTALION VIET NAM PROJECT"

On 1 May 1968 PFC Joseph F. Lodise, Jr. age 20 of Philadelphia, PA, who had only been in country 113 days, volunteered to replace another member of a V100 crew as the turret gunner on an unscheduled run of Highway 4.

A Captain from Saigon was sent to the 148th MP Platoon to conduct an on site familiarization of the 148th mission in the Mekong Delta. The Platoon Leader, 1LT Nicholson scheduled both V100’s to conduct the familiarization run. It would be PFC Lodise’s first and last V100 highway patrol.

It was a rainy day and as the two V100’s traveled north from Vinh long towards Cai Lai the turret hatch was left open and rain water collected on the floor inside the V100 where the turret gunner stood. The familiarization patrol was uneventful until the two V100 came upon elements of the 9th Infantry Division engaged in a fire fight with local Viet Cong hidden in a tree line alongside the highway. The two 148th MP Platoon V100’s came up on line to add their firepower to the infantry elements already engaged. When PFC Lodise engaged the electronic trigger mechanism to activate his twin 30 cal machine guns he was electrocuted.
