On Christmas Day, Monday, 25 December 1967, between 1200 and 1300 hours SP/4 Bernard “Bernie” Derek Johnson, age 21, was the senior passenger conducting a road patrol assignment in an armored 1/4 ton jeep on Highway 1-A) near Tanker Hill on Long Binh Post.

While rounding a curve the driver of the jeep was temporarily blinded, lost control, and struck a road sign at Grid Coordinates YT031067 before the jeep overturned. SP/4 Johnson was thrown from the jeep and crushed when it rolled over on him. The vehicle operator also injured, survived the accident.
