The 720th MP
Battalion Headquarters received notification of the ambush and
subsequent deaths of CPL Clowe and SP/4 Jackson from the A Company Tay
Ninh Detachment Officer In Charge, LT Kelly, at 2315 hours (11:15 PM)
on 19 August 1967.
LT Keyyl
reported that at 2105 hours, (9:05 PM), CPL Robert Earl Clowe, age 22,
and SP/4 Wallace Michael Jackson, age 20, just left the Tay Ninh
compound gate in a jeep when they were flagged down by three young
female Vietnamese Nationals approximately 250 meters outside the gate.
When they
stopped they were ambushed by Viet Cong (VC) elements hidden in hedge
rows on both side of the roadway. One of the young females was killed,
one injured, and one was taken into custody.
Both MPs
died from wounds received from heavy .50 caliber and small arms fire.
They were pronounced dead at the 45th Surgical Hospital in Tay Ninh by
CPT Belamy, MD.
