WETUMPKA, Ala. -
An Alabama National Guard master sergeant died from a heart attack
while serving on active duty at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Master Sgt.
Herbert R. Claunch, 58, of Wetumpka died Sunday after collapsing on the
floor in his quarters, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.
"The last
thing he said to me was, 'I love you,' and that was so important to
me," Sherra Claunch said of her last phone call with her husband.
Claunch was
assigned to the Army National Guard, 217th Military Police Company at
Prattville.
An
investigation into his death was incomplete Wednesday.
Claunch was
born Sept. 11, 1945, a coincidence not lost on family and friends who
said he lived to serve his country.
"He died
doing what he loved best," his wife said.
Claunch
worked for Frontier Yards as a manager in Wetumpka.
