MEMORIALS FOR SP4 CASTLEBERRY FROM VIETNAM VETERAN'S MEMORIAL FUND (www.vvmf.org):

"Less we never forget" - I bunked next to Jim while we were in Viet Nam together. Since he was so new in country, the MP's didn't have room for him in their hootch so he had to live with the Cooks and members of the 43 Signal Company. I could never understand why he volunteered to go to Nam or that he volunteered to go on His last patrol. Boredom does crazy things to people.

To his wife, I offer my belated Condolences. To his daughter.. Your Dad was a great big bear of man but gentle as a kitten.. Anyone that ever knew him, sorrowly misses him, even 35 years after his death

"For his Widow" - I served with Jim at Fort Hood before he left for Vietnam. We weren't really close, however the one distinct memory I do have of him was when we finished MP school and how delighted he was that he could finally bring his wife to Fort Hood so that they could be together again. He showed me her picture and went on and on about it. I never saw a happier 23 year-old married man. God bless him.

"GOOD-BY JIM" - IN THE WEE MORNING HOURS ON 31 MAY 1968 JIM AND I HAD PERIMETER DUTY ABOUT 7 KLIKS SOUTH OF DALAT.WHILE LISTENING TO A FIREFIGHT AT A SF CAMP TO THE EAST JIM TALKED ABOUT HIS NEW BABY DAUGHTER. SIX HOURS LATER WHILE SWEEPING THE ROAD WITH OUR 409TH MONTAGNARD SCOUTS, JIM, AT POINT, TOOK THE FIRST CLAYMORE. JIM AND FOUR YARDS DIED THAT DAY.  I WANT JIM'S FAMILY TO KNOW WE TRIED EVERYTHING TO SAVE HIM. IT WAS OVER SO QUICKLY JIM DID NOT SUFFER. AND WHEN WE RETURNED TO BASE WE PRAYED AND SAID LAST RITES FOR HIM AND OUR YARDS.

I THINK OF HIM EVERY 31 MAY AND WANT TO TELL HIS DAUGHTER ONE OF HIS LAST THOUGHTS WAS OF HER. BUT, I'M AFRAID TO REOPEN THE HURT.
