Matthew J. Burton

WINTERVILLE — Sgt. Matthew J. Burton, 27, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Fort Bragg. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Homestead Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Morton, Ill.

Sgt. Burton, a native of Morton, Ill., was a graduate of Morton High School, where he had been on the wrestling team. He served in the United States Marine Corps for five years and was stationed at Cherry Point. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he joined the United States Army Reserve and was called to active duty in January 2003, stationed at Fort Bragg. He had been a resident of Winterville for the past six years and was employed at Southeastern Freight Lines in Kinston.

Sgt. Burton is survived by his wife, Karen Burton; stepdaughter, Tiffany Haskins of the home; parents, Robert and Sue Burton of Morton, Ill.; brothers, Christopher Burton of North Pekin, Ill. and David Burton of Goodfield, Ill.; grandparents, Donald and Kay Williams of Topeka, Ill., Charles and Kathy Burton of Henderson, Nev., Art and Jane Faucon of Roanoke, Ill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and after the funeral service at the home of Bob and Donna Howard, 2331 Mayfield Drive, Winterville.
