BERNARDO - Newell James Berger Jr., 77, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at
his home.
Born Oct. 26, 1926, in Pittsburgh, he lived in Rancho Bernardo for
eight years.
He retired in 1978 as a Colonel in the U.S. Army. He received the
Legion of Merit Award with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was director
of Security Office of the Surgeon General in 1972 and 1973.
He was a graduate of Michigan State University. He was a member of the
International Association of Chiefs Police, the American Society of
Indsl. Security.
Mr. Berger was preceded in death by his wife, Grace D. Turner, in
November 1990. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Darlene
and Tom Turner of Alice, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Richard H.
and Barbara Jean Berger of Cashiers, N.C.; sister Rosemary K. Berger of
Harrison Township, Mich.; and grandchildren Kristen and Matthew.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St.
Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 16275 Pomerado Road in Poway with the
Rev. Dr. Gary Nicolosi officiating. Private cremation is planned.
